I just downloaded Garageband for iPhone today and after giving it good spin this evening Ive got to so its absolutely stunning! Ive downloaded 6 or 7 drum machine and music production apps in the last two week that have come up short. Must of them just arent very functional when it comes to actually 'making music' rather than just toying around. The amazing this is the price, at just over $5 Im utterly wowed. I truelly believe that several hundred music apps have just become redundant. There are some elements in it that the full computer version doesnt even feature. The integration of an on board sampler is an absolute killer. I look forward to putting this baby to good use when stuck places with time to kill. More details

Bob Zabek's Youtube channel is appropriately title bobwizard because he certainly is a wizard on the fretboard. Using entirely a midi guitar for the playing of sounds this is a really cool piece of creative music making by David Walliman. The guitar used was a Brian Moore IGuitar with a Roland Midi Pickup. All sounds you hear are triggered with the guitar only. Behind the scenes of Devin Townsend's Deconstruction. Devin says "This is a record I have been working up to for some time, and while doing it, I realize that not only am I in control of it (totally) but that this newfound control allows me to take it to places I would have never been able to a decade ago. I pretty much believe that this will be one of our finest hours, and although there is some funny moments, it's a pretty 'pointed' record (if ya know what I mean)... Anyways, any stuff you hear on these clips are either demos with drum machine, scratch vocals and demo guitars etc... but at least it illustrates the process in the beginning."

Tommy Emmanuel, Andy McKee and Sungha Jung meet onstage to play Ebony Coast. An amazing meeting of guitarists Im sure you will agree! To tell the truth though it looks like there was no rehearsal of any kinda so the guys float around without any clear direction. Im not a huge fusion, but this is a great exceptions. What I love in this video is the awesome interactivity between bass and drums and the magic chaos that emerges when you put three guns in one room together. Ive seen a few dodgy looking robotically played musical instruments but this blows them out of the water, this is a whole band, 'the Trons' Damn nice job for a bunch of New Zealand lads! The only let down is the song is well, pretty lame. Bring on some classic rock... Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Metallica?

The is the $50 film clip for 'The Space on the Wall' by Dead Letter Circus. Cool band, funny clip. I always have a lot of admiration for bands who can come up good film clips on a budget of little to nothing. Think Ok Go's 50 million view treadmill clip . Not that this clip is particularly fitting for the song, but the sentiment is still the same entertaining, with out the big budget.

So if you have ever had anything to do with midi you'll know that the basic concept is TRIGGERING. Its most often used to trigger instrument sounds by pressing keys on a keyboard or to trigger drum samples with an electric drum kit. You can go further and do clever things like set up midi sequence events to trigger the change of guitar patches on pedal boards so that all complex pedal bashing is automated. (Mind you I have rarely seen it done out of practicality... its more a case of guys trying to hook two things together a get one device tell the other what to do purely out of manly conquest and feel proud of his own technical abilities.) So before I get any more side tracked, in a nut shell midi is both terribly geeky and self indulgent while also have the potential to do some really cool stuff.
